Asan is a city in South Chungcheong Province, South Korea. It is located at 36°47′N, 126°59′E. It is known for its hot springs. Asan has pretty much absorbed the neighboring village, Onyang, which is also known for its hot springs. Onyang is not to be confused with Onyang-eup in Ulsan.
It shares with the neighbouring city of Cheonan a station for the KTX high speed trains, called Cheonan-Asan Station.
Modern history
- In 1983, alteration of townships(ri) and towns(myun) was made.[2]
- In 1986, Onyang eup(town) of Asan was separated and independent city of Onyang was generated.[3]
- In 1995, the City of Onyang and Asan County were combined into the City of Asan.[4]
Famous people
Famous people associated with Asan include the late Yun Po Sun, former President of South Korea.
Admiral Yi Sun-sin, who defeated the Japanese navy, lived for some time in Asan. There is a miniature replica of his turtle ship on the outskirts of town.
