The parliament of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, the Assembly of the Republic (Cumhuriyet Meclisi) has 50 members, elected for a five year term by mitigated proportional representation. A party must cross the election threshold (5% of the total vote) to get any seats in parliament. The TRNC parliament is composed of 50 MPs, chosen from 5 electoral districts, Nicosia, Famagusta, Kyrenia, Guzelyurt and Iskele. In TRNC parliamentary elections, voters vote for individual candidates. There are two ways of voting.
Status of the TRNCThe Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is a self-declared entity on the island of Cyprus that is recognised only by Turkey. It is located in northern Cyprus within the internationally recognised borders of the Republic of Cyprus. The United Nations recognises the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus over the whole island, and has deemed TRNC legally invalid. 2005 Parliamentary electionsThe latest parliamentary elections in TRNC were held on February 20, 2005 as early elections, after the coalition government between CTP and DP, led by Mehmet Ali Talat lost its majority in the Assembly.
