Berno or Bernon de Baume (c. 850 – 13 January 925) was first abbot of Cluny from its founding on 11 September 910[citation needed] until he resigned in 925. He was subject only to the pope and began the tradition of the Cluniac reforms which his successors brought to fruition across Europe. In 890, he founded the monastery of Gigny. In 910, William I of Aquitaine, founder of Cluny, nominated him abbot. He placed the monastery under the Benedictine rule: founded by Benedict of Nursia and reformed by Benedict of Aniane. He took the habit in Baume-les-Moines, where he became prior, and resigned as abbot in 925. He divided his abbeys between his relative Vidon and his disciple Odo. He is regarded as a saint, with his feast day on January 13.
