Characters in this book need to be noted separately since they do not appear as active characters, but are shown to Aeneas in a vision in the underworld, and are mainly either:

• historical or mythical figures from Aeneas's future (ie from the Roman past or present of Virgil's time)
• dead victims of the Trojan Wars
• those damned to the Greek equivalent of hell, or raised to Elysium
