D'elles
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
D'elles is the title of Céline Dion's most recent French language album. It was released between May 18 and June 1 2007 in certain European countries, on May 22 2007 in Canada, and February 27 2008 in Japan.[1] It's her 23rd French album and 34th if counting all longplays.
Album informationThe title is a spin-off of Dion's 1995 album D'eux. Both can be translated as About Them, with D'elles being specifically the feminine version. The lyrics were written by ten prominent female writers from Quebec (Jovette Alice Bernier, Janette Bertrand, Denise Bombardier, Marie Laberge, Lise Payette) and France (Nina Bouraoui, Françoise Dorin, Nathalie Nechtschein, Christine Orban, George Sand). Jean-Jacques Goldman made a lyrics selection. Seven out of thirteen songs planned for the album were recorded on December 20th and 21st 2006 at the Piccolo Studios, Montreal. A second version of "A cause," called "On s'est aimé à cause" was recorded in New York, in early February 2007. The song "La diva" includes fragment of La bohème performed by Maria Callas in 1956. The track was said to be recorded also in Italian and English, but these versions remain unreleased. "Et s'il n'en restait qu'une (je serais celle-là)" is the first and only single from this album released on a CD. The song became a hit entering the French Singles Chart at number one. Sony BMG released other songs as radio singles only: "Immensité" (France, Quebec), "Le temps qui compte" (Poland), "On s'est aimé à cause" (Quebec). "A cause" was supposed to be released as the third single in France, in January 2008. However, Sony BMG changed their mind and replaced it with "Le temps qui compte" the next month. What's the most interesting, radio stations made their own choice and started to play "On s'est aimé à cause" at the end of February 2008. As a result, this song became the actual third single in France. PromotionCéline Dion taped two TV specials dedicated to the issue of her album D'elles: one for the French TV-network TF1 and one for the Quebecer TVA. The taping took place in Montreal on May 11-12, 2007. During the first taping for TF1, Dion sang live several songs with French singers: "Stayin' Alive" with Vitaa, Shy'm and Amel Bent, "Hymne a l'amour" with Maurane and Johnny Hallyday, "Blueberry Hill" with Johnny Hallyday, "The Show Must Go On" with Christophe Maé and David Hallyday, "My Heart Will Go On" with Lââm and Amel Bent, "Caroline" with MC Solaar and Nolween Leroy, "Être à la hauteur" with Merwann Rim and Christophe Maé, "Caruso" with Florent Pagny and then she sang in playback three songs from D'elles: "Et s'il n'en restait qu'une (je serais celle-là)," "A cause" and "Immensité." During the second taping for TVA, Dion sang many new songs in playback: "Et s'il n'en restait qu'une (je serais celle-là)," "Immensité," "Je cherche l'ombre," "Berceuse," "La diva," "Le temps qui compte" and "On s'est aimé à cause." They also showed the recording sessions for "Femme comme chacune," "Lettre de George Sand à Alfred de Musset," "Si J’étais quelqu’un" and few footages taken from the Live in Las Vegas - A New Day... DVD (footages of "River Deep, Mountain High" and some behind-the-scenes). The Quebecer TV special became the most-watched TV-broadcasting of May 21 2007 with 1,508,000 viewers. The same happened with the French TV special which became the most-watched TV-broadcasting of June 9 2007 with 4,987,440 viewers. Dion will give six concerts in France in May 2008 and two in July 2008 to promote D'elles and Taking Chances. The shows are a part of the Taking Chances Tour. She's reported to perform "Et s'il n'en restait qu'une (je serais celle-là)" and "Immensité" during the French leg of the tour. Chart successD'elles shot to the top of the Canadian album charts, selling 72,200 copies (including 69,285 in Quebec[2]) in its first week, making it the biggest debut of the year, according to data compiled by Nielsen SoundScan.[3] It marked her tenth number one album in the SoundScan era, and her eighth to debut at the top position. Dion's high-water mark for Canadian sales remains 1997's Let's Talk About Love, which had opening week sales of 230,212 - a record debut which still stands to this day. In Canada, the album has been certified 2x platinum and has shipped half a million units worldwide on the first week of sales.[4] D'elles debuted also at number one in France, selling 55,244 copies[5] and reached the top in Belgium, shipping 25,000 copies (gold certification).[6] In Switzerland the album peaked at number three and was awarded with gold certification for over 10,000 copies sold.[7] After nine months on the French Albums Chart and Platinum certification, D'elles jumped from number 105 to 41 in March 2008. The week after, it fell to number 43. To date, the album has sold 229,000 copies in that country and almost 700,000 worldwide. Track listingCD
