Film journals and magazines combine discussion of individual films, genres and directors with in-depth considerations of the medium and the conditions of its production and reception. Their articles contrast with film reviewing in newspapers and magazines which principally serve as a consumer guide to movies.

- fps magazine (1991) fps (frames per second) is the magazine for film and TV animation.
- Impact UK monthly magazine covering action entertainment: including martial arts films, anime and manga.
- Millimeter B2B magazine focusing on motion picture and television production.
- Modern Screen (1930 – 1985) Popular American magazine featuring articles, pictorials and interviews with movie and TV stars as well as music personalities.
- Monthly Film Bulletin (1934 – 1991) British Film Institute publication merged with Sight and Sound in 1991.
- MovieMaker (1993) Independent film and filmmaking.
- Neon (1996 – 1999) Irreverent contemporary British film magazine published monthly by Emap.
- Photoplay (1911 – 1980) The original film fan magazine featured celebrity interviews and articles.
- Premiere (1987 – 2007) American film magazine
- Scenographer Magazine International magazine dedicated to production designers, costume designers and set decorators working in cinema, theatre and television.
- Screen Quarterly international journal of academic film and television studies.
- Shivers (1992) UK film magazine dedicated to horror genre movies, television shows and literature.
- Smoke & Mirrors Australian quarterly magazine for filmmakers, make-up and special effects practitioners.
- Starlog (1976) US monthly science-fiction film magazine.
- Variety (1905) Entertainment movie news, reviews, and entertainment industry events, news and reviews from Cannes, Oscars, and Hollywood awards.
- TAKE:1 (2005) Indian monthly magazine with articles on a variety of topics, ranging from movies, celebrities and their lifestyles.

- Maarvon Israeli Magazine, since 2005. Maarvon is a part of Maayan, a magazine for poetry and ideas.
- Filmjournalen, Swedish film magazine 1919-53.
- Film, An Iranian Monthly magazine since 1983. There are various kind of articles in every issue from Iranian cinema to world cinema, from festival reports to serious theoretic parts. Some of the most celebrated Iranian film critics from different generations with different approaches write in this magazine. Also an English version of *Film called *Film International is published quarterly.
