FlashGet (formerly JetCar, from the literal translation of the Chinese phrase 快车) is a freeware download manager for Microsoft Windows. It was originally available in either paid or advert-supported versions, the latter of which included an Internet Explorer BHO and led to some labelling it as spyware.[1]
Features
- Integration with web browsers such as Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape, Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, SeaMonkey, Avant Browser, Maxthon
- Can download a sequence of files
- Download a file from multiple locations
- Split files to download into sections, and download each section simultaneously.
- Integrated web crawler
- Language support
- Support HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, Microsoft Media Services, RTSP, BitTorrent and since version 1.8.4 eDonkey [2] downloads
- Manages downloaded files easily
The latest 1.9.6.1073 version has a "FlashGet recommends" column which some find irritating, however there is an option for it to be turned off. (View\Recommendation)
Privacy concerns
FlashGet has become a free to download software, although it was not always such. After installing 1.9.6, aside from the advertisement in form of the mentioned "FlashGet recommends", I noticed a few attempt to connect to the internet while there was nothing to download. I also noticed it installed a software called minKuGoo which, according to PervX MINIKUGOO.EXE, might be cause for concern. It certainly installed itself along with FlashGet and extensively modified windows registry. Uninstall did not remove the modifications and it took considerable time and effort to remove entries from the registry.
Flashget version 1.9.X has /or downloads on update/ trojan hourses (TR/Dldr.Agent.kdt, TR/Agent.AHDK), identified as such both by Kaspersky Antivirus and Avira AntiVir PE.
Cause for more of a concern, if confirmed is FlashGet's support of Adware. Version 2 of this popular download Manager has a much improved UI with new features but has animated ads, some advertising spyware (e.g. you are the 1 millionth winner type of thing). It's still unclear if these adware supported changes will show in the English versions. What is clear, the preview after Beta 4 started to show implemented the adware (animated ads) downloaded to the PC. (In the FlashGet v2 Beta 5 Preview.)
