Setting

Series 1: FushigiBoshi

Fushigi-boshi is a hollow planet that has all of its inhabitants living inside. The story is set within the Ohisama no Kuni (おひさまの国 the kingdom of the sun) that governs the floating sun at the center of the planet called Ohisama no Megumi (the blessing of the sun). Periodical rotations of Ohisama no Kuni bring days and nights to the inhabitants of the planet because it shines on one side only.

On the interior shell of the planet, there are other six kingdoms. Each kingdom shares a duty:

  • Tsuki no Kuni (月の国 the kingdom of the moon) controls nights and watches Hoshi no Izumi (Spring of Stars), a gateway to outer space.
  • Mera-Mera no Kuni (メラメラの国 the kingdom of flames) changes "Ohisama no Megumi" into heat and keeps the temperature constant.
  • Shizuku no Kuni (しずくの国 the kingdom of water drops) makes clouds and rain with heat.
  • Kazaguruma no Kuni (かざぐるまの国 the kingdom of windmills) transports clouds and other products using wind.
  • Tane-Tane no Kuni (タネタネの国 the kingdom of seeds) produces plants using rain.
  • Hoseki no Kuni (宝石の国 the kingdom of jewels) makes ornaments.

Fushigiboshi only takes place during the 1st season. Futago Hime Gyu! (2nd season) takes place in another world called Gakkouboshi, meaning school star.

Series 2: Royal Wonder Academy

The Royal Wonder Academy is a specialized, prestigious institution for princesses and princes from all over the universe. If they complete their schooling and earn their diploma here, they earn the right to become the kings and queens of their planets. This school happens to be a boarding school, much like Hogwarts Castle from Harry Potter. The school has very strict rules and tough guidelines that all students must follow. Student evaluation is based on a point scale system. If the student's point value reaches 100, he or she is promoted to the next level. On the contrary, if the student's point value reaches -100, he or she is expelled from school. Point records are kept in little notebooks, and first year students start with 10 points.

Story

Futago Hime (Series 1)

Seven royal families reign over each of the seven kingdoms, prospering inside the planet for a long time. However, Ohisama no Megumi or the internal star is beginning to die, and it has been forecasted that it will disappear in one year. If it disappears, all of the planet will be covered in darkness. Twin princesses Fine and Rein receive a secret mission from Grace to investigate the reason for the star's decline. Using the power of the Prominence, they can hope to rescue the Ohisama no Megumi. Later in their investigation, an evil chancellor named Roman becomes so interested in the power of the Prominence that he steals the Prominence for his purposes. After he unleashes the ultimate enemy, evil begins to spread.

The evil power possesses Prince Bright. Under evil power, he attempts to rule the entire Fushigi-boshi. Fine and Rein, along with other people, try to investigate and defeat the powers of evil that possessed Bright.

Futago Hime Gyu! (Series 2)

Fine and Rein as well as the other princesses leave FushigiBoshi to attend the Royal Wonder Academy of Education. This prestigious institution is the school where Princes and Princesses from all of the planets come to receive their certification to become Kings and Queens. Upon arrival to school, Fine and Rein's unprincess-like actions cause them to violate school regulations and lose points. During the orientation of 1st-Year students, the vice-principal presents a legendary bell that will only ring when a certain person touches it. If the bell rings, the person is classified to be the "Universal Princess". No princess had ever rung the bell before. But Fine and Rein rang it, and they transformed.

Strange situations have also been occurring in school. A dark entity usually comes out and forces everyone to become depressed. When someone resisted, the dark entity would send monsters that damage property extensively. One of the first people to become possessed under this entity was Toma, the new president of the student advisory.

Characters

In the following list, “(CDB)” denotes a spelling found in Fushigiboshi no Futagohime Character Detail Book (ふしぎ星の☆ふたご姫 キャラクターディテールブック, ISBN 4-86176-246-4) [1] —generally (but not necessarily) the information in this book is official.

Main characters

Sunny Kingdom (おひさまの国 Ohisama no Kuni)

  • Fine (ファイン) - Fine is one of the Twin princesses of Ohisama no Kuni. She has red eyes and hair. She is also referred to as one of "the most unprincess-like princesses in the history of Fushigi-boshi". Fine is often afraid of things and whines frequently. Because Fine is a glutton with a love for sweets, she will eat any delicious cake she sees. She is also fairly athletic, but is not very good at dancing, like her sister Rein. Nevertheless, she is very friendly and kind, and cares very much about the people she loves. She soon discovered her love for Eclipse, whose true identity was Prince Shade. Prince Bright is attracted to her.
  • Rein (レイン) - Rein is the other Twin princess of Ohisama no Kuni. Unlike Fine, she has blue eyes and hair. Although she is also referred to as one of "the most unprincess-like princesses in the history of Fushigi-boshi", she is not entirely like Fine. She likes to dress up and wear very elaborate decorations. However, she can get very crazy when it comes to daydreaming about romance, mostly about her crush, Prince Bright. She is still very friendly and eccentric as her sister, but is adventurous, unlike the cowering Fine. Rein's name was originally going to be spelled as "Rain" in English, but was changed when director Junichi Sato did not want her name to be related to the weather rain.[citation needed]
  • Princess Grace (プリンセス・グレイス) - She was the legendary princess who saved Fushigi-boshi in the ancient days. Although she died ages ago, she appears as an astral body inside the core of the sun's blessing before Fine and Rein to entrust in them a mission to save the planet.
  • Poomo (プーモ) - Poomo is a fairy-like follower given to the twins from Princess Grace. He has a supernatural ability called Telepoomotion that will transport Fine and Rein to any place in the Fushigi-Boshi. However, Fine and Rein use him as their maid to do their housework. He usually ends his sentences with "-de pumo".
  • Camelot (キャメロット) - Camelot is Fine and Rein's maid. Although she is very bossy during the beginning of the series, she actually has care and shows her enthusiasm for educating Fine and Rein to make them better princesses.
  • Lulu (ルル)- Lulu is Camelot's trainee. She gives suggestions to Camelot in some cases. She also takes comprehensive notes of Camelot's work.
  • Elsa (エルザ) - Elsa is the queen of the Sunny Kingdom.
  • Toulouse (CDB: Truth) (トゥルース) - Toulouse is the king of the Sunny Kingdom.
  • Omendo (オメンド) - Omendo is the laboratory scientist at the Sun Kingdom. He analyzes all of the climate data processed by the weather stations.

Moon Kingdom (月の国 Tsuki no Kuni)

  • Milky (ミルキー) - Milky is the princess of the Moon Kingdom. She is a toddler and travels around places in her floating star. She has trouble communicating to many people with her "babu babu" babbling, but people like Shade and Fine can understand what she means. She is also very gluttonous and often eats up all of the food before Fine can reach it.
  • Shade (シェイド) - Shade is the prince of the Moon Kingdom. Although he appears as Eclipse during the beginning of the series, he is identified by the same whip attacks as Eclipse. He starts to like Fine through the series progression. He also seems interested in the power of the Prominence. Although he appears indifferent and cruel as Eclipse, the twins discover that in his true identity he is actually a caring person. He wants to be a doctor so that he could take care of his sickly mother.
  • Regina - Regina is Shade's dinosaur. She was given to Shade when he was five years old.
  • Moon Maria (CDB: Moon Malia) (ムーンマリア) - Moon Maria is the queen of the Moon Kingdom. Her mood and health is measured by the aurora waves floating in the sky.
  • Chuuba (チューバ) - Chuuba is a very accurate fortune teller.
  • Monmon Golem (モンモンゴーレム) - Monmon Golem is a beast that sleeps deep inside the temple. At certain times of the year, he will wake up and blow the obscuring clouds away from the moon to allow moonlight into the Moon Kingdom.
  • Queen Scorpion (女王サソリ) - Queen Scorpion is a very big scorpion that comes only when her little scorpions get defeated. She is very sensitive to loud noises.
  • Mia (ミーア)- Mia is a local worker near the Star Lake.

Flame Kingdom (メラメラの国 Meramera no Kuni)

  • Lione (リオーネ) - Lione is the princess of the Flame Kingdom. She is too personal and often takes thoughts in too deeply. Also, she is not too fond of dancing. However, she knows ways to cheer up her brother, Tio. She is good at Samba dancing at the annual Samba party in the Flame Kingdom. She has some useful skills like driving and being able to tell how Bo Dragon is feeling.
  • Tio (ティオ) - Tio is the prince of the Flame Kingdom. Tio likes to play with his katana (saber) and do ninja. He often makes useless appearances in the episodes because he crashes while he tries to rescue Fine and Rein from trouble. He sees Shade as his hero.
  • Wohl (CDB: Wal) (ウォル) - Wohl is the king of the Flame Kingdom. He is very dynamic and his excitement is emphasized by the torches in the throne room.
  • Nina (ニーナ) - Nina is the queen of the Flame Kingdom.

Water Drop Kingdom (しずくの国 Shizuku no Kuni)

  • Milro (CDB: Mirlo) (ミルロ) - Milro is the princess of the Water Drop Kingdom. Like Lione, she is very personal too. However, she is avery good artist and makes excellent paintings. She takes care of Nalro, her baby brother, very well.
  • Nalro (CDB: Narlo) (ナルロ) - Nalro is the prince of the Water Drop Kingdom and is about in the same age range as Milky. His infamous way to call his mom is "Gabin!!" ("Gabin" means "Oh my GOD!" in Japanese.) He seems to have a crush on Milky.
  • Yarmul (CDB: Yamul) (ヤームル) - Yarmul is the queen of the Water Drop Kingdom. She is very strict and firm about Milro acting like a proper princess, ordering Milro to follow everything she says.
  • Ada and Ida - Ada and Ida are two villagers of the Water Drop Kingdom. They take care of the birds very deeply and will do anything to obtain food for the birds, including pretending to be Fine and Rein.
  • Esteban - Esteban is a little boy that Milro was supposed to marry. He is kind to her though. Being younger than Milro, Esteban does not even understand what marriage is. He drives a small car.

Seed Kingdom (タネタネの国 Tanetane no Kuni)

  • The 11 Seed Princesses - The Seed Kingdom has 11 Princesses. It is hard to tell who is who because they all look alike with the exception of the hair color. From the Futago Hime Character Detail book (CDB), the seed princesses names are Ichele, Nina, Saya, Shiyon, Gorchel, Loloa, Nursya, Harney, Quarry, Julia, and Joiner. Their names are subtly related to numbers from one to eleven in Japanese.[2]
    ex:Ichele is "ICHI"(1), Gorchel is "GO"(5)

Windmill Kingdom (かざぐるまの国 Kazaguruma no Kuni)

    • Altessa (CDB: Altezza; in Italian, altezza means "highness", as in "his" or "her highness") (アルテッサ) - Altessa is the princess of the Jewelry Kingdom. Unlike other princesses, Altessa aggravates very easily. She often yells at people and gets mad when something that she wants never gets done. She also likes showing off. A good thing about Altessa is how she really cares for Bright. (“Altessa” is a wrong spelling. Both CDB and CDB2 have her name as Altezza, not Altessa.)
    • Bright (ブライト) - Bright is the prince of the Jewel Kingdom. His mood changes in the series ranging from being amiable to evil. In the middle, he feels misplaced because Eclipse always takes his spotlight away when it comes to saving his crush, Fine. • Aaron (アーロン) - Aaron is the king of the Jewel Kingdom.

    • Sirius (セリアス) - Sirius (also known as Serias in the subbing) is the other jewelry maker. Unlike Ms. Butterfly, his mom has worked with Fine and Rein's mom, Elza, in the past. Sirius, not too interested in elaborate designs, puts his heart into all of the jewelry he makes.
    • Puppet (プペット) - Puppet is a moveable-type doll living in the junkyard at a nearby amusement park called "Doll Town". She hopes that her original owner retrieves her.

It also controls what Bright does, forcing him to use the Prominence when someone disobeys Bright. Although the Black Crystal does not walk by itself, it can expand rapidly. The fuel for the Black Crystal is people's sadness.

In the beginning, most of these attacks are intended to help other people and themselves. That was the task that Princess Grace gave Fine and Rein. Later attacks can be classified as direct attacks to defeat enemies.

    Futago Hime (Series 1)

    • Twinkle Bloomish - This is the only single-person Prominence attack, also called "Hitori Prominence". Fine or Rein says "Daruma-san ga Koronda" to freeze objects or "Kakurenbo shimasho" to turn invisible. This prominence can be used alone but has less of an effect than the other prominences. Additionally, this prominence has a time limit based on the amount of power the twins have.
    • Twin Twinkle Bloomish (Princess Levels 1, 2, and 3) - This attack releases many stars that help Fine and Rein solve the problem they're faced with. Other times the attack causes a series of events to unfold which then lead the twins to a solution.
    • Twinkle Fortune Bloomish (Princess Level 4) - This is the 2nd attack. This attack is more direct than the previous Prominence; however, it stands short against Bright's Dark Prominence.
    • Twinkle Eternal Solar Bloomish (Princess Level 5) - This is the 3rd and most powerful attack. This attack is stronger than Twinkle Fortune Bloomish and sends an ultimate deal of damage at Bright's evil use of the Dark Prominence.
    • Final Prominence- This attack is simply Twinkle Eternal Solar Bloomish used in conjunction with the powerful Grace Stones.
    • Myuugram de dancing - This attack is not done by transformation. Instead, Fine or Rein presses one of the three buttons on the Myuugram to make it play music. Anyone standing in front of the Muugram will be forced to dance depending on the music the Myuugram plays. There is one secret music hidden inside the Feather Myuugram.

    Futago Hime Gyu! (Series 2)
