Jump to: navigation, search

Portuguese hip hop (Hip hop português) mostly known as Hip Hop Tuga is the Portuguese variety of hip hop music, although different because it is mixed with African music from Lusophone Africa and reggae. It is often performed by African-Portuguese, descendants from African immigrants that came to Portugal after the independence of the former African colonies. The past 5 years have been productive and names such as Valete, Da Weasel, Boss AC, Sam the Kid (rapper & producer), Dealema, Mind Da Gap, Micro, Matozoo and DJ Bomberjack gathered many followers in the underground subculture. Graffiti artists names include, among others, Mosaik, Caos, Colman, Uber, Que?, Oker and Kayo. Da weasel is actually a white band that combine Hip hop with rock. [1]

Hip hop tuga is more popular in more urban areas of Portugal. Also Portuguese youth that live in cities like London & Paris, listen to more Hip hop than Portuguese youths back in Portugal. The reason for this is the city life in urban areas. Spanish and Portuguese are both European latins. In Brazil (which most people in Brazil are originally Portuguese) they make Portuguese hip hop.
