The Kangxi Dictionary

The Kangxi Dictionary (Chinese: 康熙字典; Hanyu Pinyin: Kāngxī Zìdiǎn) was a Chinese dictionary, compiled under an edict from the Qing Dynasty Emperor Kangxi of China in 1710. It was completed and published in 1716 (55th year of Kangxi, 3th month, 19th day[1]) and named in honour of the Emperor of China.

The dictionary contains some 47,000 plus entries, with Chinese characters ordered under 214 radicals together with the pronunciation in traditional fanqie spelling, together with references to books, works and dictionaries which contain the entry character.

It also contained rime tables with characters ordered under rime classes, tone, and initial syllable sounds.

The Kangxi dictionary is available in many forms, from a modern printed edition with corrections and essays in Western hardback, to old editions from the Qing dynasty to the 1940's or facsimilies bound in traditional Chinese stitched form in cloth cases.
