Kirsten Cohen (née Nichol) is a fictional character on the FOX television series The O.C., played by Kelly Rowan.
BackgroundKirsten is the eldest daughter of real estate developer Caleb and Rose Nichol, older sister of Hailey Nichol and older half-sister of Lindsay Gardner. She is a graduate of UC Berkeley with a degree in Art History. Kirsten has two biological children, Seth and Sophie, and one adoptive son, Ryan. Life before season oneShe married husband Sandy Cohen sometime during her rebellious twenties. Kirsten states that when they fell in love, she "lived in a mail truck and stank of patchouli". Since marrying Sandy and giving birth to their son Seth, Kirsten's mother became ill with ovarian cancer and so Kirsten moved back from Berkeley and joined her father at the Newport Group, becoming somewhat of a workaholic. In contrast to her husband, Kirsten Cohen is relatively conservative. She is referred to as a WASP in season one. Season oneKirsten was best friends with next-door neighbor Jimmy Cooper in high school, and they used to date each other. In the first season finale, she hinted to Theresa that she had an abortion early in her life. In an alternate universe, Kirsten is married to Jimmy. Season twoThe problems began for her during the second season when she feared that her husband was cheating on her with an old girlfriend, Rebecca Bloom, who mysteriously showed up back in town. Sandy and Kirsten's marriage began to deteriorate, and she turned to alcohol to compensate. Her alcoholism was fuelled by working closely with a man whom she was having a crush on, Newport Living magazine editor Carter Buckley, who also drank too much. Towards the end of the second season, Kirsten crashed her car while driving drunk. She had just gotten off the phone with Sandy, who had told her to pull over, but it slipped near the gas pedal. Kirsten reached over but smashed into another car. She also caused a scene at her father's funeral. Following an intervention, she was checked into a rehabilitation program because of alcohol abuse. Season threeAt Suriak Rehab, she met Charlotte Morgan, who seemed to be interested in her. In reality, she was a con artist who was only after her as an unsuspecting partner in a con, since she was the richest woman in Newport Beach. Kirsten returned home and created a high-class dating service, NewMatch, with her one-time stepmother Julie Cooper-Nichol. Over the course of the third season, Kirsten and Sandy once again found themselves amidst conflict due to his decision to take over the Newport Group. Long hours made Kirsten concerned that Sandy was turning out to be a workaholic like her father, who died of a heart attack. This causes her to relapse, yet the problem was settled when Sandy decided to quit the job at the end of the season. Season fourKirsten attempted to garner a silent partner for NewMatch in Gordon Bullit by setting him up with Julie. A family crisis appears when Frank, an accountant brought in to deal with NewMatch's books, reveals he is Ryan's biological father. Kirsten ostracizes Julie after suspicions about the business and fires her after she uncovers it has become a prostitution ring. On the night of her fortieth birthday, Sandy gives her two around-the-world first class air tickets and she tells him she is pregnant. In the series finale, they go to the Cohen house and they realize they can't remodel which leads them to Berkeley. Kirsten asks the couple that live there if she can use their bathroom. They reveal her water broke, and she gives birth to her daughter in the Cohens' house in Berkeley. Her daughter is named Sophie Cohen after her mother-in-law. In a flash forward Sophie is shown to bear a striking resemblance to Kirsten. Family tree
