Li Fuguo (李輔國; 704-762) was a eunuch official during the reign of Emperor Suzong of Tang Dynasty. He supported Suzong as emperor to replace Emperor Xuanzong, since by then (and until 981) eunuchs had achieved the power of appointing or dismissing an emperor. As Suzong thought he had distinctive merits, Suzong appointed him as a high rank official in the Military Department (元帥府司馬). Upon the return to Chang'an, he became the Chief General of the Military Department (禁軍大元帥). He then suppressed Xuanzong and Gao Lishi. In 762, he and another eunuch official, Cheng Yuanzheng (程元振), murdered the wife of Suzong, Empress Zhang. Shortly after that, Suzong died of a sudden heart attack. After Emperor Daizong ascended the throne in 762 AD, Li tried to hold on to power and called on Daizong to stay in the palace while he himself would attend to the administration. But Li had miscalculated Daizong's resolve and he was assassinated by Daizong in a palace intrigue. |
