There are 478 incorporatedcities and towns in California, of which 456 are cities and 22 are towns. Under California law (see, e.g., Government Code Sections 34500-34504) the terms "city" and "town" are explicitly interchangeable; the name of an incorporated municipality in the state can either by "City of (Name)" or "Town of (Name)." The term "township" is obsolete, and the terms "village" and "borough" have never been used.
They are arranged in alphabetical order, with the "towns" marked '*'.
