Note: Australia, at 7,600,000 km², is here considered a continental landmass rather than an island. Australia is more than three times the size of Greenland, the largest island. However, Australia is sometimes considered 'The Island Continent'.[1]
Islands over 250,000 km²
Although an island is, in general, any land mass that is completely surrounded by water, some definitions exclude land masses large enough to be considered continents. Placing Australia in the latter category (even though arguments can be made whether it is technically a continent, or merely part of the larger continent called Australasia) makes Greenland the largest island. For the sake of classification the list of islands will begin with Greenland.

References
Most figures are taken from the United Nations Environment Programme list of islands by area.
Note #1-4 refer to some other sources.
- The figures of the Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic islands Charcot Island, Smyley Island, Latady Island, Rothschild Island and Hearst Island (note #5) are just rough estimates found on this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Antarctic_and_sub-Antarctic_islands. The estimate of Latady Island (700 km²) is probably wrong. Another source claims it is 3,300 km². http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latady_Island
- Vanikolo Island (173 km²) is really a group of several islands. The main island is called Banie, the second largest (close to it) is Tevai, and then there are the much smaller Manieve, Nomianu and Nanuga. It is hard to find the exact size of just Banie, but a rough estimate from map indicates ca. 150 km².
- Nggela (386 km²) is really an island group (also called Florida Islands). Main islands are Nggela Sule, meaning Big Island (also called West Florida Island) and Nggela Pile, meaning Small Island (also called East Florida Island). The area of Nggela Sule and Nggela Pile altogether seems to be 386 km². It is hard to find separate figures for the islands, but a rough estimate from map indicates Nggela Sule: ca 230 km², and Nggela Pile: ca 150 km².
