Man and Nature is a book written by George Perkins Marsh in 1864.

It documents the effects of human action on the environment.

Contents

The book consists of ten chapters:

  • Chapter I - Introductory.
  • Chapter II - Transfer, modification, and extirpation of vegetable and of animal species.
  • Chapter III - The Woods.
  • Chapter IV - The Waters.
  • Chapter V - The Sands.
  • Chapter VI - Great projects of physical change accomplished or proposed by Man.

Publication

  • Man and nature; or, Physical geography as modified by human action. (1864)
  • The Earth as Modified By Human Action. Second edition (1874) ISBN 0-405-02677-3 (1970 reprint)

It was also translated into Italian by Marsh in 1870.
