He has been Chief Minister of Tripura since March 1998, and is a Politburo Member of Communist Party of India (Marxist). He has a background as a prominent leader of Students Federation of India. He is governing Tripura in a coalition called the Left Front. He is probably the poorest(as he reported bank balance of just Rs.13,920 for Feb-2008 Elections) chief minister in India who is financially dependent on his wife Panchali Bhattacharjee(an officer of the Central Social Welfare Board under the central government). He does not own a house or a car so far. |
