Before becoming McClymonds Educational Complex in 2005, McClymonds High School, also known as "Mack," and "Mack House," is a public high school in the West Oakland neighborhood of Oakland, California. It is the only high school in the West Oakland area. HistoryMcClymonds was founded in 1923. The school was named after J.W. McClymonds, who at one time was the superintendent of the Oakland Unified School District. Some of its many famous alumni include MLB players Vada Pinson, Frank Robinson, Curt Flood,[1] and Curt Roberts, the first African American fielded by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Others include NBA Hall of Famer Bill Russell, NBA player and coach Paul Silas, and NBA players Joe Ellis, Nate Williams, and Antonio Davis. Still others include Jim Hines, Olympic gold medalist, 100 yard dash record holder, and the first man to break the 10 second barrier, and Demetrius "Hook" Mitchell, one of the greatest street basketball players. Rapper MC Hammer and former U.S. Congressman Ron Dellums, the 3rd African-American mayor of Oakland, are also among McClymonds alumni.[2] The late Malcolm X gave a speech at McClymonds at a function sponsored by the Afro-American Association. A young Muhammad Ali spoke at the function. Black Panthers co-founder Huey P. Newton, was in attendance. In the early 1980s, a former McClymonds student, Haneefa Olufemi, set fire to another student's hair using a lighter. In 1994, Olufemi became a violence prevention counselor for McClymonds. As of 2005, McClymonds possessed an API score of 486, a statewide rank of 1, and a similar schools rank of 2.[3] Due in part to its relatively low standardized test scores, McClymonds nearly closed down entirely, but instead on August 29, 2005, was split into McClymonds Educational Complex. StereotypeMcClymonds has been called a harbor for delinquent students that are not capable of reaching higher standards of education and success.[attribution needed] but this has been proven wrong. The BEST small school located on the McClymonds Campus Has turned out many College bound Students. Just to name a few these students include Nhi Troung President of Key Club and currently a freshman at UC Santa Cruz, Jorge Gonzalez Vice-President of Key Club and freshman at San Francisco State and Michael Bradley, Oakland Top 10 Super-Student by Oakland Magazine and Freshman at UC Berkeley.
