Indiana is the 19 th U.S. state and is located in the Midwest region of the United States of America. With over six million residents, it is ranked 15 th in population and 17 th in population density. It is 38 th in land area. Indiana is bounded on the north by Lake Michigan and the state of Michigan; on the east by Ohio; on the south by Kentucky, with which it shares the Ohio River as a border; and on the west by Illinois. Indiana is one of the Great Lakes states. As of 2006, Indiana has an estimated population of 6,313,520, which is an increase of 47,501, or 0.8%, from the prior year and an increase of 233,003, or 3.8%, since the year 2000. The total gross state product in 2005 was US$214 billion in 2000 chained dollars. Indiana's per capita income, as of 2005, was US$31,150. The Calumet region of northwest Indiana is the largest steel producing area in the U.S.
Indiana is a diverse state with a few large urban areas and a number of smaller industrial cities. It is best known for the Indianapolis 500 American automobile race, held annually over the Memorial Day weekend, and a strong basketball tradition, often called Hoosier Hysteria. Residents of Indiana are called Hoosiers. The state's name means "Land of the Indians" and Angel Mounds State Historic Site, one of the best preserved prehistoric Native American sites in the United States, can be found in southern Indiana.
Indiana University is the flagship campus of the Indiana University system. It is also known as "Indiana University Bloomington," "Indiana," or simply IU, and is located in Bloomington, Indiana.
IU has 110 academic programs ranked in the nation's top 20. Twenty-nine graduate programs and four colleges at Indiana University are ranked among the top 25 in the country in the US News & World Report's Best Graduate Schools 2001-2002. Time magazine named Indiana University its "2001 College of the Year" among major research universities. Newsweek named Indiana University "the hottest big state school in the nation" in 2005. Indiana is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities, the leading American research universities. According to The Public Ivies: America's Flagship Public Universities (2001) by Howard and Matthew Greene, Indiana University is one of America's "Public Ivy" institutions of higher education, defined by the authors as a public institution that "provides an Ivy League collegiate experience at a public school price." The university's intercollegiate athletic program boasts 25 national championship teams (including seven in soccer, six in swimming and five in basketball) and 133 individual national championships (including 79 in swimming and 31 in track and field).

Virgil Ivan "Gus" Grissom ( April 3, 1926 – January 27, 1967) was a United States Air Force pilot and the second American astronaut to fly in space. He was killed during a training exercise for the Apollo One mission on January 27, 1967, at Launch Complex 34 at Cape Kennedy. A native of Mitchell, Indiana, Grissom earned a B.S. from Purdue University in 1950 and joined the United States Air Force. Receiving his wings in March, 1951, during the Korean War he flew 100 combat missions in F-86s with the 334th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. Grissom rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In 1959, after physical and psychological tests, Grissom was chosen as one of the seven Project Mercury astronauts.
Carmel is a city in Hamilton County, Indiana, United States. The population was 37,733 at the 2000 census but has been growing very rapidly. In 2005 the population was recorded to be over 65,000. It is considered to be a suburb (or edge city) of Indianapolis and is characterized by its many roundabouts. Until the late 1800s, the settlement where present day Carmel now sits was called Bethlehem. Today, the plot first established in Bethlehem, located at the intersection of Rangeline Road and Main Street, is marked by a clock tower, donated by the local Rotary Club in 2002.
