University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute

Formed in 1985, the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (UMBI) is part of the University System of Maryland. It was created to provide a unified focus for Maryland's biotechnology research and education. It comprises five centers:

  • Center for Advanced Research in Biotechnology
  • Center for Biosystems Research
  • Center of Marine Biotechnology
  • Institute of Human Virology
  • Medical Biotechnology Center

UMBI is currently located in the Columbus Center in the Inner Harbor, Baltimore, Maryland. The Columbus Center was briefly used as a science museum in the late 1990s but closed soon after.
